At least 20 people have been killed in a powerful earthquake in Pakistan’s southern Balochistan province, officials say. The death toll could rise as more physical infrastructure is destroyed.
Most of those killed were women and children, according to Reuters. According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the 5.9 magnitude earthquake was 9 kilometers below the ground. Earthquakes that are centered at low depths do a lot of damage.
Local officials told BBC Urdu that at least 100 others had been injured and many more had been taken to hospital in critical condition. According to local media, rescue work is underway and army doctors and other health workers are also on duty at the site.
Many seriously injured people have been airlifted to Quetta, the provincial capital, for treatment.
The quake destroyed more than 200 mud houses and damaged many other concrete buildings.
Expressing his condolences on Twitter, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed all parties concerned to provide immediate assistance, relief, and compensation to the quake victims in Harnai, Balochistan.
